Emma Barclay and Ian Parlin spent the weekend in Inverness for the 2nd running of the Loch Ness Marathon. Registration took place the day before the event with a pasta party, music, massage and a talk by Adam Bean of Runners World (USA).

It was an early start on race day with busses leaving from Inverness for the start at 8am. The race started at the southern end of Loch Ness on high ground and made a gradual descent to the shores of the loch by mile 8. The next 8 miles were fairly flat and afforded a good opportunity to enjoy the scenery. At mile 16 the course headed away from the loch for an easy 3 mile climb (easy when compared to the feeling of the last 4 miles). The last few miles of the marathon were run along the banks of the River Ness to finish on the track of Inverness Queens Park Stadium.

Emma, with a time of 3:18:32, finished 61 out of 752. She was 8th female overall and 3rd female senior. Ian finished in 260th place with a time of 3:49:02. The event was well organised, well marshalled with plenty of water and Lucozade stations, and even more pasta, music and massages after the race. T-shirt, medal and goodie bag as well. Top race and a good weekend. http://www.lochnessmarathon.com/results/index.php

McDonalds Forfar 10K - Sunday 24th August - David Houston writes “I travelled to Forfar in good time - and distributed about 150 LLHM entry forms under windscreen wipers - that was my warm up and first excuse for poor performance. 167 people ran the race. It is a very pleasant course mostly in flat farming countryside - well marshalled and signposted. The temperature was high - I think probably well over 20 degrees C (my second excuse for poor performance). The first runner came in at 31.56. Liz McColgan came third with 34.47 (my third excuse for poor performance). My last excuse for poor performance is no training last Wednesday! I struggled in at 52.00 and the last runner came through at 90.55 (He was apparently from the Sore Blister Running Club). Second last time was 72.41. As my oldest son always points out, I was nearer to the winning time than the final time. http://www.forfarroadrunners.com/10K_Results/2003/Forfar%2010km%20Results%202003.htm

Treasure Hunt - Thursday 21 August - David Houston writes "Brian had organised a really interesting route for the car treasure hunt. There were five cars - all commanded by members - viz: me, Judith, Ann (H), Graeme, Christine. Three of the cars progressed in the correct direction all the time (well nearly as I must admit we had a couple of mini reverses), but it was interesting to meet Ann and Judith travelling in the wrong direction at one point. The joint winners, with 95% pass mark were the President and his wife (Alison) [both super vets] ably assisted by Debbie - who did all the running from the car to the clue and read all the clues without specs, and the Kinloch family. The Malcolm family and the Hamills did very well in the circumstances, but it is very difficult for me to explain why the Secretary (Mrs Dobson), the senior coach (Mr Nouillan) and a very bright Kinross High School pupil (Master Dobson) failed to enter the prize list. Anyway, everyone enjoyed the hunt and we had a pleasant drink in one of the locals in Falkland afterwards. Congratulations to Brian on his excellent route and clues. By the way, Debbie didn't know what a 1/- was, but I would have thought Bill might have!
